Specifically, Short-Range Messaging (SMS) services are impacting the law enforcement effort to track terrorist and drug traffickers, because SMS service lack location identification capabilities. The shortcomings of SMS messaging location awareness was showcased in the TV series "Bones". In the episode, "Aliens in a Spaceship" Brennan (Bones) and Hodgins are buried alive and have to save themselves by sending just one SMS message. In the buried car, Brennan works on hotwiring her cell phone to the wires of the car horn to send one SMS text message before frying her phone, but first they need to figure out what message to send to identify their location. Hodgins uses dirt from the area, chemicals in the perfume, a laser pointer, and a lens of the camera to find out what kind of coal is in the dirt. He narrows down their location based on this information about the coal. He tells Brennan he knows where they are. Hodgins also figures out an eight keystroke message to send that will let FBI Agent Booth know their location. At the lab, Booth receives the message and tries decipher the message to locate them. They decide that the message is numbers, so it is intended for Zack. Since Hodgins is all about dirt, Zack suddenly realizes the meaning of the text message, and narrows down their location down to a specific place. They race to the identified location and rescue Brennan and Hodgins just in time before they run out of air.
