Search for a Location

You don't have to know an exact street address to find a location. You can use the Find Control to use Windows Live Local search capabilities.

To start a search, activate the Find Control by pressing the "Find Control (On/Off)" button.

Once the Find control is activated an input box appears.

To find a specific location:

  1. In the "Where" search box, type one of the following:
    • A full address
For example: 110 23rd St NW, Washington, DC 20037
To ensure the best possible match, include as much of the address as you can, and use commas.
    • A partial address
For example: Chicago, IL, United States
To ensure the best possible match, include the name of the country.
    • A place name
      For example: Lincoln Memorial
    • A neighborhood name
For example: University District, Seattle, WA
    • A major landmark
      For example: Grand Canyon
  2. To start the search, click FIND.
  3. If more than one possible location is found, a list appears below the search boxes.
Click the desired location in the list.
For example, "Boston" is found not only in Massachusetts, but also in New York, Arkansas, Georgia, and Kentucky.

When the search is complete, a pushpin marking this location appears on the scratch pad and the map centers on the new location.

To deactivate the Find Control push the "Find Control (On/Off)" button and the control will disappear.

You can search for any category in any location—for example, all the pizza restaurants in Boston—regardless of the visible map area.

To search for a business or category in a specific location:

  1. In the "What" search box, enter the category that you are searching for.
  2. Examples of a category include:
    • A business name
      For example: Joe's Diner
    • A business category
      For example: Laundromat
    • A keyword
      For example: car
    • A business phone number, including area code.
  3. In the "Where" search box, enter the city, address, or landmark to search for a location, and then click FIND.
  4. If more than one possible location is found, a list appears. In the list, click the location that you want.
For example, "Boston" is found not only in Massachusetts, but also in New York, Arkansas, Georgia, and Kentucky.

When the search is complete, search results appear in the left panel and the map centers on the new location.

To deactivate the Find Control push the "Find Control (On/Off)" button and the control will disappear.

To move the map a little:

  • Click within the compass.

To move the map a lot:

  • Click within the compass and drag in the desired direction.
The farther the pointer is from the center of the compass, the faster the map scrolls.
